How to make sex less uncomfortable?

I am 23 and recently had my first bf and started to have sex for the first time and i found it very uncomfortable and painful. I know it is supposed to be painful and uncomfortable and takes a while before it starts and feels good. I was wondering if there was a way to lower the discomfort and make it feel a little better? We did a a lot of foreplay before but it still didn't make a difference.
